Mountain Sprout

Who Is Mountain Sprout

The Mountain Sprout Band is the most authentic modern Ozark music available today. Hailing from Eureka Springs, Arkansas, four incredible musicians work seamlessly to bring forward the kind of bass thumping, banjo picking, guitar playing, fiddle shredding, that makes you get and stomp your feet. The lyrics present a variety of stories and jokes that resonate with drunk and sober listeners alike. If you are a hillbilly, a good ‘ol boy, or just a finely crafted music lover, Mountain Sprout is not to be missed!

Greg Montgomery – NKC MO News

Mountain Sprout has the look of wild all over them in their long beards and smoke and drink while they play attitudes. It is a potent combination and it works. The Quartet plays wild and loose too, sawing fiddles or trashing banjos. They inject their funny songs about weed smoking and beer drinking and fight causing with fervor and a sense of believability.

Kevin Kinder – Arkansas Democrat Gazette

They say even the littlest bit of physical exercise helps. While a band like Mountain Sprout has no illusions about being fitness gurus, when listeners hear an actual Mountain Sprout song it’s the hardest thing in the world not to get off their butts and start dancing around. Whether a person has one drink in his or her hands or a dozen already inside his or her guts, the little band from Eureka Springs, Arkansas, will either set toes tappin’ at the very least, or someone will need to call 911 because the lack of motion will indicate death. Mountains Sprout’s personality is genial and friendly. They like the finer things in life – drinkin’, smokin’, music, parties. Their subject matter is the same and surprisingly is anything but one-trick. Like the best bands that soak their music in the communal tub of rotgut, weed and wild nights, Mountain Sprout is in on the joke.

This one time, we were all sitting around in Malibu, CA, sipping campari, watching the girls run around nude in the surf . Quentin Tarantino was tuning our instruments and Steve Buscemi was cooking up some shrimp on the bbq. Steve Earle was singing funny songs by the pool, and our hair was
swept by the breeze, and…ah…oh…That was somebody else…sorry

History
: Randy Hackathorn taught me his left hand upside down style so I could join the “Hack Band”, and play with the Redmond Brothers. Then I started playing with Steve Jones, and eventually joined the “Eureka Swings”. That played out, and Jonny Palmer and I started “Black Jesus”, at which time I played occasionally with Little Joe McClarin. When Jonny moved to Austin, I played with the Hog Scalders and the Souvineers.

Music Influences: Wayne Hancock and Jake Irwin, from the “Hot Club of Cowtown”. Milt Hinton, from Cab Calloway, will always be my favorite, though. Randy Hill from the “Whistle Pigs” style. He’s f-ing amazing!

Favorite Band Story:
Before I joined the band and Coy Dog left, we were all at Dark Fest II. All the musicians went floating with the patrons on Sunday. I asked Coy if I could use his pet raccoon to help me hit on some chicks that were floating that day. The raccoon and I swam over to their canoe, and their dog jumped in after the coon.

Long, drawn out, and inappropriate. …except when my first banjo player joined AA and quit, so Mountain Sprout was the next best thing. A month later he called me but it was too late. Mountain Sprout had begun to grow.

Extra:
I love what I do and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I never in my wildest dreams thought I would have come this far. But, follow your heart one day at a time and one day we’ll all get what we deserve. Karma is a M.F.
